Interview with Morgan Gebhardt aka “The Health Hustle”

Today I sat down for coffee and interviewed a dear friend of mine, Morgan Gebhardt. For those of you that do not know Morgan, she is the creator of The Health Hustle blog. You may also recognize her from instagram account that is full of bright and vibrant healthy food photos.

Morgan and I met about a year ago and instantly connected through our love of healthy food. Since then we have developed a very special friendship and she is the only one that truly understands my love for Kombucha, vegetables, and overly priced health foods. We had such a great time doing this interview and I hope you all enjoy it as well!

Me: How did you get involved with health and wellness?

Morgan: It all started when I was a freshman in college. This was the first time when I was on my own and making my own decisions. Since I attended a small school in a small town, there was not much to do. During this time I got into a bad habit of partying and eating out. My friend and I would go out to dinner at the dining hall and get calzones or cheesy bread like 3x a week. I also wasn’t very active during this time either. Back in high school I was on the dance team and never needed to work out outside of that. Therefore when I transitioned to college, I wasn’t used to not having dance as my form of exercise. After a while I started noticing my body changing. My clothes were not fitting the way that they used to and this was the first time I noticed that I had gained the Freshman 15. A few months later I went to Sunriver, Oregon with my family. I remember staying back at the house while my whole family went swimming because I didn’t like the way that I looked in a swimsuit. From there, I decided to make a change. I went back to school, changed my habits and used this time to teach myself about health and wellness. I got into running and changed the way that I ate. No more burritos and sugary lattes. From there I changed my major to nutrition and switched schools to Oregon State University. Since then I have developed a more balanced lifestyle. I love taking pictures of food, posting to instagram, and sharing my healthy meals with the online community.

Me: Do you follow a specific diet?

Morgan: Not anymore. I used to, however. I used to eat a low-fat and low-sugar diet while trying to incorporate whole foods. I also tried a vegan lifestyle for a month. Both ways led to eating more processed foods than normal because I wasn’t prepared. I also tried to go gluten-free for a while but I didn’t really like it. Now I just try to eat whole foods and the best that I can with the options available. I try to plan ahead in case I get stuck somewhere. Ultimately, I strive for balance.

Me: What is your favorite type of workout?

Morgan: That is a hard one! I would say dancing. I don’t do it as often anymore but I enjoy it. I love running and the feeling I get afterwards too.

Me: What is your favorite food product to buy right now?

Morgan: Bitchin’ Sauce! The cilantro chili flavor. You can add it to veggies, meat or rice and it just gives it so much flavor.

Me: If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Morgan: Definitely sushi

Me: How do you stay motivated while leading a busy lifestyle?

Morgan: It is so easy to get into a slump of not working out. It is even harder to get out of that slump. I think surrounding yourself with people that are doing things is helpful. My parents also really motivate me. I like seeing people get creative with health and wellness.

Me: What is your favorite book?

Morgan: Love Does by Bob Goff. Love Does is a good book for health and spirituality. It motivated me to do things in life and not be discouraged.

Me: What does the perfect day look like to you?

Morgan: The perfect day to me is one that refreshes me. I like to wake up without an alarm, put on a flannel & yoga pants, then go on a drive to get coffee. I would spend the day outdoors, eating well, and exploring new hip & healthy places.

Me: What is your ultimate favorite treat?

Morgan: Either chocolate chip oatmeal cookie dough or thick pancakes with peanut butter and syrup.

Me: What are 5 things always in your pantry?

Morgan: Eggs, Collagen Powder from Further Foods, Oats, Peanut Butter, and Spinach.

Me: What is the main focus of your blog?

Morgan: The Health Hustle is a balanced lifestyle and motivation blog. It does not discourage people people to stop doing things that they want to do. It inspires people to not feel bad about living life.

Me: Where can we find you?

Morgan: For easy meal prep and recipes: and to for food pictures and inspiration: Instagram @the_health_hustle
